I posted some semi-cryptic — or perhaps simply disillusioned — musing about my job some months back. Since then, the unfolding has... uh, unfolded.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

It wasn’t too different than what I imagined. August was a meat-grinder, and September produced the second-worst numbers of my career. But...

Oc tober was my 2nd-best month ever. A nd, AND, already in November, I’m on pace to shatter my personal best, and will post the 3rd-best individual month of anyone *ever* at the company! (I already hit 2nd best , set in May 2017).

I was relieved because all of my clients liked me enough to stay with us. I had a builder describe my service akin to “miracles.” I worked long hours, every Saturday, most Sundays, and ground myself into near-dust. Clients became increasingly demanding and difficult due to the cooling market and shortage of labor in general to complete homes. There were many tense moments throughout.

But now I’m reaping the rewards and working hmmm maybe 30 hours this week and beginning the recovery process . We’re entering winter so I know I had to absorb as much work as I could while the gettin’ was good. So soon I’ll have too much time on my hands and probably buy things I shouldn’t.

Anyway... Felt it was okay to post something positive for a change

Congratulations, glad things turned out well.

I just found out today my role is being eliminated. I’m fairly confident I can find a new one at my employer, but not looking forward to yet more uncertainty (this has been looming for a while).

I really need to set aside some money so I can survive more than a few days of unemployment. I’m too old to be this stupid.

I love S amoyeds so, so much. To be fair I’ve never owned one. Only played with those owned by wealthy clients. They’ve all been so friendly. Like, enough to put a golden to shame.

I've heard they're a handful though

They are very friendly, yes. I grew up with one, my mum has another one now. My mum’s new dog is very bratty and pretty destructive. Has a hard time listening to people. The old one mellowed out with age, but he was also pretty destructive.

Some might say Samoyeds have “sensitive stomachs”. What that really means is anything that slightly disagrees with them will get thrown up or pooped out pretty quickly.

All in all, yeah, they’re high maintenance.

One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was when someone told me soon after I started my first job “ before you start spending up, make sure you have Fuck You money put away ”.

Fuck Y ou money being defi ne d as “enough to walk out of your job on impulse and b e confident you and your family will be OK till you have som ethi ng else line d up”.

Their propo sition - which has wor k ed for me so far - was that once you have it, you’ll never need to use it: just knowing you can escape takes the worst stress out of most job situations. E ven if you’re fired, being chill about it improves your odds of finding something else quickly - desperation isn’t an attractive feature t o a pros p ecti ve e mplo yer.

My target is to have 6 months of income in savings. It feels impossible to reach, but once you have it: you have it. Life is long, there will be rainy days ahead for me.

I started off at 3 months, which took me about 2 years of hard saving to achieve back when I was a fresh grad. It topped out at about 12 months when I had more responsibilities (and income) . Nowadays we have two incomes and can survive on either one at a pinch (no fun but do-able, we’ve proved it), so the bar’s pretty low. There comes a point where fuck you money blends into retirement savings though.

Malamutes are great. Big lazy pretty dogs that sleep more than cats. One of my friends has a samoyed and a malamute. I have two malamutes, and they’ve spoiled me.

My boss quit my company last month and honestly nothing has changed other than I got his over budget projects. Looking forward to some snow and ski days in December.

My dad gave me the same advice: 3-6 months of income (or 3-6 months’ worth of expenses, same idea) in savings, not to be touched except for a rainy day. It took several years, but I got there, and it really is a good feeling to know that if you suddenly lost your job (or felt the need to quit suddenly) you could still pay your bills for a few months while you sort out the next move.

I’m well aware (I live a couple hundred miles south of him) , but he said he was working “hmmm 30 hours this week” so if the 10 hours fewer come equally across all days it’s not out of the question.
